Summary:
In Anno's beautifully illustrated medieval world, superstitions rather than science explain natural phenomena, especially the shape and movement of the earth. Anno uses medieval styled illustrations to share these beliefs of the Middle Ages up to the Age of Reason. In an Author's Note, Anno provides more specific historical and scientific information.

Teaching Ideas:
As with Anno's wordless books, readers will enjoy identification activities and building vocabulary. The book stimulates interest in further research into alchemy, plagues, and astronomy. Teachers may want to pair this with Starry Messenger, examine other Medieval art, list the scientific theories of this time period and the outcomes of them, or create a timeline of the Middle Ages (part of) and research other events happening at the time.
