Summary:
The Anasazi, "the ancient ones" in Navajo, had a unique and well developed culture. Around 1300, they simply vanished. Today, their home (Mesa Verde) is a national park. This carefully researched text recreates the Anasazi's way of life and explores the mystery of their disappearance.

Teaching Ideas:
Because the book contains so much factual information, teachers may want to excerpt it. The author's approach would work well for units in science, cultures, history, art, or geology. The information on archeology and anthropology is interesting and could lead to further inquiry. Learners could also compare the Southwestern U.S. then and now or use the text to explore the issue of what makes a culture. GED teachers may want to exploit the many words with Greek and Latin roots for vocabulary study. Mesa Verde: www.visitmesaverde.com/
