Summary: |
This is a collection of 14 short stories about people with many different cultural heritages and ethnic backgrounds. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Many of these stories will provoke reminiscences and so may be used with most free response activities. "Raymond's Run" has a strongly drawn character (Squeaky), as does "Sixth Grade." "The Circuit" could be part of a text set about migrant workers or could be paired with "Business at Eleven" to focus on change. "The Loudest Voice" and "Hamadi" could be part of a "holidays" unit. Several stories center around aspects of family, too, or of understanding cultural differences. Another group of the stories addresses how adults interact with children and teachers ("The Wrong Lunch Line," "Sixth Grade," "White Umbrella") or strangers ("Thank You M'am," "Business at Eleven"). Several are set during the Great Depression and so could be added to the study of that era.
