| This is not easy reading, although it would be appropriate for GED students (the names may give trouble). If the class studies the book or if the ABE teacher reads it aloud, certainly everyone should listen to parts of or all of the opera. It may provide a good introduction to classical African-American musicians (Kathleen Battle, etc.), and in that connection may be read with Belton's From Miss Ida's Porch. Or readers could look at similar stories where lovers are from warring families (like Romeo and Juliet).
