Summary:
When 15-year-old Lawanda befriends a WW II veteran living in an old school bus, she sets in motion events that will change her life and all those around her. The well-written story unfolds with each chapter telling the story from the point of view of each of the main characters.

Teaching Ideas:
Several topics would lend themselves to Agree/Disagree activities for discussion and writing, such as Mamaw's character and her religious experience and Garland's role as a father. Because the characters have real strengths and weaknesses, they can be compared and contrasted easily: Lawanda and Nancy Catherine as daughters; Garland and Howard as fathers; and Mamaw and Judy as mothers. Garland's journal entries, which are a masterpiece of ambiguity, would be worth "close reading." Do students know town or neighborhood characters that might be harboring stories as interesting as Garland's? The narrative style with chapters written from different characters' point of view lends itself to a Readers' Theater strategy for advanced readers. Although the author does not emphasize the Appalachian setting, how would the story change if it were located elsewhere?
