HSE Descriptor(s):    language arts - reading

Summary:
The author provides 12 biographies of important men throughout the world and throughout history that she illustrates in the art style of the time and place. An introduction, maps, and a list of further reading make this a useful book in the classroom.

Teaching Ideas:
Learners might be interested in categorizing the heroes--community leader, artist, writer or musician, scientist, etc. (some will fall into more than one category), and then compare and contrast them by culture, historical period, education and so forth. The individual maps and timelines could be transferred to a unified timeline and world map. Learners can use the format as a model to write about someone they think should have been included. Students might write about what makes a hero?
