Summary: |
The author, a writer, scientist, and artist, keeps a journal and pictorial record of two months she spent studying the adelie penguins in Antarctica. The illustrations are factual and charming. A map and glossary aid the reader. |
Teaching Ideas: |
There are many books on the artic regions to make a varied text set. Students might want to compare the journals of William Byrd Black Whiteness with Webb's. Because measurements are given in metric, teachers could easily develop a math lesson. The map and text lend themselves to math and map work as well. An interesting comparison-contrast book is Loon by Peck. Students could use a matrix or a Venn diagram to compare them before writing. Perhaps because the facts are told in a journal form, the author's personality comes through. Students might enjoy the exercise of inference in writing about why the author braved the hardships of Antarctica in order to study penguins--why she wants to return! |
