Summary: |
In a dream-like story and illustrations, Allen Say captures the infamy, dislocation, and loss experienced by Japanese Americans in the internment camps during World War II. |
Teaching Ideas: |
As part of a text set on WW II, this book contributes an insight into the feelings of Japanese Americans in the internment camps. Learners may want to compare the internment of the Japanese with the Nazi concentration camps and the forcing of Native Americans onto reservations. Different students or groups could choose a perspective: the government and its rationale for creating the camps; the residents of the camps; or the general citizens and their issues of fear and patriotism. As a read aloud the book could be used for comparison with the feelings of Arab Americans and the fears of other Americans after 9/11. In order to understand the meaning of the story, learners can make a list of the places--tunnels, desert, camp--and things--name tags, search lights--and discuss what they refer to historically. Learners who like the look and style of the author, can read other books by Say like Tea With Milk and Grandfather's Journey. They could write a biographical paragraph on the author based on their reading and web sites www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/featrues/allensay/ www.eduplace.com/rdg/author/say/question.html, and www.ala.org/alsc.html. |
