Summary:
When Young Ju emigrates with her immediate family to America from Korea, she misses her grandparents. As she grows older, she finds a refuge from her father's physical abuse in school achievement. The author mimics the style of narration with the age of Young Ju in the chapter.

Teaching Ideas:
The book raises many questions that students can discuss and write about: How is the family typical of other immigrant families and how are they not? Why does the father become abusive? Why does the mother stay in the marriage? How does the family life affect the brother? Students can predict what will happen to each of the main characters in 5 years.
