Teaching Ideas:
This book provides a wonderful "way in" to Spanish and Mexican American culture. ESOL students can read poems as a transition to English. Readers who loved Tomas and the Library Lady, a story by Pat Mora, will not want to miss the poem "Tomas Riviera." The book could be used in a text set on migrant workers with Children of the Dust Bowl, The Circuit, Calling All Doves, and Out of the Dump. While the geographical connections and historical references are not the focus of the book, they can be exploited in the classroom. Readers interested in learning more about the author should look at the web site www.patmora.com.
