Summary:
Photographs present the life of Jose and his family who live in a barrio or Hispanic neighborhood in San Francisco. A glossary contains Spanish words used in the story. One reviewer felt that the glorification/simplification of the issues addressed may make the book inappropriate for readers who are wary of "kids" books.

Teaching Ideas:
Students will enjoy comparing the celebrations and customs of Jose's neighborhood with their own, perhaps using a Venn diagram. The color photographs can be used as writing prompts for a range of topics--Latin culture in the U.S., Latina/o art and murals, social issues (including AIDS), and community life. Students may want to create a book about their own neighborhood using personal photographs.
