Summary:
Lush color photographs and text tell the story of how Dian Fossey studied the gorillas in Africa and died trying to protect them and their habitat during a time of political unrest.

Teaching Ideas:
The maps included may intrigue some students to find the areas where Fossey worked on a world map. Because the book describes Dian Fossey as a very complicated person, students may want to write a character sketch based on their reading. What legacy did Fossey leave behind? Students may be interested in researching on the Internet and comparing and contrasting with a Venn diagram the three protégés of anthropologist Louis Leakey who studied primates--Birute Galdikas, Jane Goodall, and Dian Fossey. Additional information on Dian Fossey can be found on these web sites: www.unmuseum.mus.pa.us/fossey.htm and www.nationalgeographic.com.
