Summary:
In 1991, New York's long-ignored African Burial Ground was rediscovered. The description of what scientists found there and how they pieced together information about life serves as a backdrop for stories of life for African Americans in Colonial New York.

Teaching Ideas:
This book would be a good addition to text sets about African American history or anthropology/ archeology. The book could be paired with early chapters of Katz' Black Legacy for history and Bone Detectives for archeology. A focus on the culture and daily lives of the Colonial African Americans might prove interesting, as might an exploration of how science aides in historical discovery. The story of Caesar and the robberies and fires (which begins in Chapter 8) could be excerpted.
