Teaching Ideas:
Teachers will probably want to read this book with learners in mind before using it instructionally. Bud is 10 years old, but the story is very engaging and Reading Group members were not at all put off by his youthful voice. In fact, they found it funny and refreshing. This would be a good centerpiece book for a study of the Depression. Lots of then-and-now discussions would be interesting, too-- imagine a 10-year-old taking off today! Other instruction might focus on family history. The quality of the writing is good and may provide models for descriptive writing.
