Summary:
The collection of poems is organized by American historical themes rather than by chronology. There are many poems that are familiar patriotic songs.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers will find this a useful anthology to find excerpts for classroom themes, especially to support American history. For example, Pinkney's gorgeously illustrated picture book John Henry could be paired with the anonymous poem "John Henry." Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg are among recognized poets presented. Many more recent poets are also included. Library audio cassettes might provide the music for the patriotic songs.
