Summary:
With beautiful paper pulp illustrations and rich, alliterative text, the author raises the question of whether development is good ecology for the community.

Teaching Ideas:
ESL students will find the illustrations useful for vocabulary development. Beginning readers will be able to read and discuss community change. The book lends itself as a model for writing using the repetitive phrase "Where once there was....The pages at the end include extension activities involving local environments with addresses of organizations to contact for more information. Most communities will have a then and now example to apply the book to.
