Summary:
This biography chronicles the life of Clara Schumann, child prodigy and wife of composer Robert Schumann and mother of eight children. The book is illustrated with portraits and diary excerpts. A preface, an epilogue, a timeline, and an index make the book very useful in the classroom.

Teaching Ideas:
Students who enjoy music will enjoy the family and cultural background of famous musicians. Students who enjoy history will want to pay special attention to the Preface and the Epilogue and to think about what stimulates people to write biographies. The author talks about being influenced and assisted by her mother who studied the history of music. Students might enjoy a then and now comparison of women who juggle careers and family, parenting, and child prodigies. Students could use the timeline to mark other important events of the 19th century.
