Summary:
This is a collection of short (15-20 page) biographies of 10 African American women: Ellen Craft, Charlotte Forten Grimke, Mary Fields, Ida B. Wells, Mary McLeod Bethune, Clara Hale, Leontyne Price, Toni Morrison, Mae C. Jemison, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

Teaching Ideas:
This book could be used as part of Black History Month or Women's History Month. Students could do further research on the people briefly mentioned at the end of the book. Students could also create a time-line to compare when each individual lived and what society was like. Comparison/ contrast activities could focus on what the women have in common. Acrostics or biopoems would be good writing activities. WWW links can be found on Yahooligans by searching on African American women.
