Summary: |
This engaging novel shows a slice of life in small-town Alabama in the 1940s, as told from the perspective of 13-year-old Francie. Francie, her mother, and her brother anxiously await a chance to join her father in Chicago. In the meantime, Francie comes of age in a segregated society. (Coretta Scott King Honor Award) |
Teaching Ideas: |
This rich book contains material for a variety of writing discussion topics on family, community, and race. Keep a chart on how the ability to read and write affects the life of Francie's mother, Francie, Jesse and others. How do the black and white communities differ in their daily activities? What do the hobos demonstrate about family and community? Describe Miss Lafayette as a teacher. Predict what Francie, her mother, and brother will do in Chicago. Students may want to keep a reader's journal as they read on character development, family and community, and race relations. Since Francie's character is well developed, learners may want to make notes about who she is and how she learns and grows. The book could supplement a Civil Rights unit in social studies. Students may want to search the Internet for information about the Bellman Porters. Students might want to tell the ending from the voice and perspective of Francie's mother. |
