Summary:
Chris Raschka has blended musical notes with glorious color to make the reader see how Thelonious Monk's music would appear on paper. Reading the words on the page resembles reading musical notes on a scale rather than the traditional left-to-right, top-to-bottom print layout. This is not so much a portrait of Thelonious Monk but a portrait of his music.

Teaching Ideas:
This book should be read aloud by a teacher who enjoys music. It would be a good way to introduce jazz. Students who are interested might want to try their own hand at putting their favorite musical work into this kind of format. The back of the dust jacket explains how the colors are related to Monk's music. Students will want to learn more about Monk on web sites www.acns.nwu.edu/jazz.artists/monkthelonious/ and www.jazzinamerica.org/home.asp.
