Summary: |
This story-within-a-story tells of Stanley Yelnats (and his distant relatives, one of whom "cursed" the family), mistakenly sent to a juvenile corrections camp in Texas. At the corrections camp, Stanley finds a real friend, a treasure, and a new sense of himself. (Newbery Award winner) |
Teaching Ideas: |
This book might challenge many adult readers because of the narrative puzzle Sachar has created. Present and past alternate, and the narrative twists and turns. But the story is at times funny and at other times thought-provoking; it's very compelling reading. Character sketches, especially of Stanley's growth in maturity and self-esteem, will be effective. The setting-- a juvenile detention camp-- may provoke writing or discussion about issues related to juvenile delinquency, rehabilitation, etc. A good post-reading activity might be to chart the two stories (past and present) and examine how the author weaves them together. |
