HSE Descriptor(s):    language arts - reading

Summary:
Contemporary poets create poems in response to works of modern American art. The reproductions are very good. An introduction, index, and biographical notes of poets and artists extend the scope of the book. The poems are uneven in quality.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers will want to read the poems before using them in the classroom. The poems are not all as interesting as the paintings because many are description of the painting rather than responses. However, the paintings make good prompts for writing activity. This could be used with other books of poetry and art (see the Poetry matrix). Students may want to write their own poems based on a piece of art. (see "Using Poetry in the Adult Literacy Classroom"). A field trip to an art museum would provide a nice conclusion to work with the book.
