Summary: |
This well-researched history of African American pioneers, freedom fighters, and participants in the Underground Railroad tells little known stories of brave people who settled the midwest against great odds. The book contains archival photographs, a map, an introduction, end notes, and an index. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Students in Ohio will find the book especially helpful for researching local heroes in the Underground Railroad. It would be very useful in a text set on the Underground Railroad, especially with Freedom Light about Ripley, OH. Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa are also featured. Advanced students might be interested in the "Black Laws" and the ability of African Americans to pursue freedom in the courts. Also of interest is the Missouri Compromise and Beatty's book Jayhawker. Look at these web sites for more information: www.toptags.com/aama/docs/bcodesoh.htm; memory.loc.gov/ammem/aap/aapprot.html; www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part1/1h315.html and www.pbs.org/wgby/aia/part3/3h511.html. Students might want to compare the different midwestern states in a matrix on their positions on slavery, Black Laws, suffrage for African Americans, public education for African Americans, the Underground Railroad activities, and minority communities. |
