Summary: |
The Dunn family is traveling down the Ohio River in 1793. The children become separated from their father and must fend for themselves while heading toward Marietta. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Character sketches of the children, especially Amos and Clara, might lead to interesting comparison/ contrast discussions. Teachers might find and share a map of the area from the 1800s. Students may want to locate events on the map, determine distances traveled, etc. Journal entries about what it took to survive at the time might be used to explore aspects of life or of resilient children. Issues related to prejudice might arise as learners consider the children's attitudes toward Indians and, especially, Red Moccasin. Amos's trauma provides realistic and sensitive opportunities for discussion or writing: How was Amos wounded? What enabled him to heal? Advanced students might be interested in learning more about herbal remedies: www.planetherbs.com/articles/herbhist.html or shell.rmi.net/~grymntl/bos/herb/thm.html. Information about Ohio history is located at www.ohiohistory.org. Additional Ohio history tradebooks are described in the Ohio History Matrix. |
