Summary: |
This is a modern-day fairy tale that features a homeless girl, an old woman, and birds with magical powers. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers will want to read this book with their students in mind before using it. It will need to be presented within the context of fairy tales; some adults may find it too fanciful for their taste. The illustrations are breathtaking. Bird lovers will appreciate that aspect of the text. It could be paired with December and Fly Away Home in a unit about homelessness. Discussion/ writing might focus on 'family'; this is surely an unusual one. Perhaps, too, learners might talk or write about the role animals or pets play in people's lives. The text might be an interesting complement to nonfiction study of birds, perhaps by pairing it with Backyard Birds. |
