Summary:
The book employs maps, archival photographs, blueprints, and paintings to tell the exciting story of Ernest Shackleton's rescue of his men on his expedition in Antarctica when their boat, The Endurance, was destroyed in an ice floe. The author includes a timeline, a list of members of the expedition, a resource guide, and an index.

Teaching Ideas:
The book joins a growing text set on arctic expeditions. Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, also by Armstrong for a higher reading level, and Trial by Ice by Kostyal are especially relevant. Students might also want to compare Shackleton with Amundsen, who reached the South Pole first, as leaders and explorers. Shackleton's problem-solving abilities could be compared with Admiral Byrd's in Black Whiteness. The vast whiteness and cold are captured so vividly that students might want to do descriptive writing about it. Other topics for writing or discussion might include survival and overcoming great odds. Distances and temperatures could provide a focus for math lessons. Related WWW sites include a Virtual Tour of Antarctica (http://astro.uchicago.edu/cara/vtour), Antarctica Online (http://www.antarcticaonline.com/antarctica/home/home.htm) and an article about Shackelton from the Wall Street Journal (http://www.blast.net/features/shackleton.html).
