Summary:
On an expedition to cross Antarctica, Ernest Shackleton and his crew lost their ship in the ice flow. Shackleton and five others left in small boats to get help. This is a higher reading level version of Spirit of Endurance by the same author. The book includes a photo and list of the crew, a bibliography, maps, and an index.

Teaching Ideas:
With two reading levels of the same story, teachers can research, discuss, and write about Shackleton's expedition: his leadership, the crew's competence and resourcefulness, comparisons with other expeditions. Teachers will find ample opportunity for math and map work. Vocabulary study is also possible ("the pack," "floe," "occulation," etc.). The book may spark interest in further study of astronomy or explorers. Related WWW sites include a Virtual Tour of Antarctica (http://astro.uchicago.edu/cara/vtour), Antarctica Online (http://www.antarcticaonline.com/antarctica/home/home.htm) and an article about Shackelton from the Wall Street Journal (http://www.blast.net/features/shackleton.html).
