Summary:
When a young girl asks her mother where she comes from, she receives a loving description of her hard-working childhood in the segregated South told in rich, rhythmic language with lush illustrations.

Teaching Ideas:
What a beautiful book to read aloud to introduce a unit on family history. Students could then write a response to the question "Where are you from?" for a child in their own family or a child they know. Although told indirectly, the story provides references to segregation. Pair with Nicken's autobiographical Walking the Log and English's fictional Francie for more in-depth discussion of childhood in the segregated South.
