Summary: |
This is a collection of poetry (from more than 100 U.S. poets) and paintings, sculpture, drawings, photographs, and other works of art-- all from the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Biographical notes and an index conclude the volume. |
Teaching Ideas: |
As with all poetry collections, teachers will want to consider carefully how best to use this volume. Moreover, Reading Group members found selections "uneven"-- even famous poets are represented by some of their "lesser" poems. Nevertheless, the themes (the book is organized into 5) would be useful prompts for discussion or writing. Many poems will fit well into other units of study (e.g., family, nature, art, urban experiences, cultural stereotypes, farming, sports), and many others will be useful for read-aloud.
