Summary: |
This book provides a detailed look at 10 cities, from 11th century Jerusalem to 20th century New York City. Readers will learn about culture, architecture, and everyday life over the centuries as well as historical information about the cities themselves. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This book may be more useful as a teacher resource, for excerpting (e.g., Michelangelo, da Vinci, Mozart), than as independent reading for students. (Reading Group members found the text disjointed at times and the illustrations visually busy.) The choices of cities and times makes the book a compendium of different cultures. Since people, discoveries, historical events, etc. are mentioned but not elaborated upon, students may want to select some interesting events and do further research. Those interested in art may find the illustrator's use of perspective interesting. Map work (including then-and-now map work) is also possible. Students can talk about the illustrations.
