Summary:
Text and accompanying photographs portray the "ways" of the wild horses in the U.S. West. Issues related to the necessity of managing these animals, especially on public lands, are also addressed.

Teaching Ideas:
Students may want to locate protected areas on maps. Issues related to science and economics, especially those that touch on the environment, are interesting and perhaps worth further exploration. Students may want to compare the problem of too many horses to similar problems with deer or pigeons. The ideas of social or political activism and whether one person can make a difference might prove interesting for discussion or writing. Students may want to keep track of vocabulary from Spanish. This book would be a good nonfiction companion to Black Cowboy Wild Horses. www.nationalgeographic.com/rwa; www.animalweb.com; http://conbio.rice.edu/vl/
