Summary: |
15-year-old Charley Goddard lies about his age to enlist in the Civil War. This book chronicles his war experiences (some very graphic) with the First Minnesota Volunteers. At the end of the book we learn a bit about how the War affected Charley's mind and body. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This book would work well in a unit about war, the Civil War, or wars from the perspectives of soldiers. The author's approach is both personal and psychological, so learners may want to track Charley's attitudes about and adjustment to the war. Students may also want to explore public sentiment toward war. The map of the battles Charley experienced could be used to do math-- distances traveled. The Author's Note at the end, which tells about the true people and events used to craft the story, might lead to discussion or writing about historical fiction-- what it means, how true events are used.
