Summary: |
In 1955, the photographer O.W. Link captured the last steam railroad on its last runs in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Although the subject of the book may not appeal to everyone, train buffs will love the black and white photographs. Teachers can take advantage of combined classroom knowledge with a KWL strategy before reading. Teachers may want to use excerpts since the book is long. Because there is no glossary for the colorful technical railroad terms, making one would be an engaging class project. The book stimulates thought and discussion on topics such as the rise and fall of the train in U.S. history, the sense of community generated by the railroads, the comparison and contrast of the daytime and nighttime photographs. Students could speculate on what motivated Link.
