Summary: |
While visiting his grandfather in France, Etienne discovers a secret from the days of World War II and the Nazis. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The facts of this haunting story are revealed partially and indirectly. Students will need to piece the story together to understand what happened years before. There are movies and newspaper accounts to supplement the story of what happened to Jewish children during the Holocaust. More recent accounts of the apology of the Catholic church and the trials of the last surviving war criminals reveal the complicity of ordinary people. Bearing Witness and The Children We Remember provide additional material. Students could write about why the grandfather avoids talking about Etienne's discoveries. |
