Summary:
While in 5th grade, Trisha, the central, autobiographical character, encounters a new teacher who helps her overcome her difficulties with reading that had caused her such humiliation since first grade.

Teaching Ideas:
This book is especially appropriate for families around issues of self esteem--what encourages it and what destroys it. How does the extended family portrayed in the book support the child? In response to the family ritual in the story of putting honey on a book, students could share rituals that have been passed on in their families. The book also introduces the theme of handicaps for discussion and writing--how the person feels, how others react to someone who is different. Read aloud, the book stimulates thoughts and feelings about learning to read.
