Summary: |
The author wrote essays on thirteen African American women to accompany photographs of the Bread and Roses Cultural Project. The essays feature inspiring women who exhibited courage in overcoming barriers of race and gender in fighting for rights we all enjoy today. The author includes an additional section of short thumbnail sketches on additional outstanding women for further inquiry. Women included are Ida Wells, the Delaney sisters, Septima Clark, Josephine Baker, Fannie Hamer, Ruby Dee, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Marian Wright Edelman, Alice Walker, Alexa Canady, and Mae Jemison. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The organization of the essays suggests a comparison/contrast activity or a matrix of accomplishments, barriers overcome, people who gave support and so forth. Because the additional short biographies of African American women are arranged by career, they would be useful in a unit on career choices. For further study, students might enjoy researching more information about the organizations these women helped establish--NAACP, Children's Defense Fund etc. An Internet search might yield speeches by these remarkable women.
