Summary:
When Old Sam hires a new hand to work at the sawmill, the hired hand teaches Sam's lazy son a lesson when the son tries to con an old man. Retold from an oral African American tale, the story is beautifully illustrated by Jerry Pinkney.

Teaching Ideas:
The intriguing story could be used in a text set with other stories about older people teaching younger people valuable lessons. It also invites comparison with other legends of creating people such as The Golem and Coyote Makes Man. Students might enjoy exploring a text set of the illustrations of the extended Pinkney clan to see what media they use and to research biographical information on the Internet.
