Summary:
Spurred by a letter from her grandmother saying that "they're pulling Shorter down," the poet returns to the people and places of her childhood in Shorter, Alabama. The poems are accessible and concise but filled with powerful feeling. Photographs from the author's collection illustrate the poems.

Teaching Ideas:
The poems make excellent read aloud prompts for exploring family history and community change. The book lends itself to several text sets; 1) loss of community with Cherry's Letting Swift River Go_; 2) on displacement and personal relocation with What You Know First and The Children of Topaz; and 3) on autobiographical poems accompanied by photographs with books by Walter Dean Myers. Teachers might want to publish a class book of the writing.
