Summary:
A boy narrates the story of his friend and protector, the immigrant young man Josepha, who had to leave school to work.

Teaching Ideas:
The beautiful and detailed language of the text asks to be read aloud. The text could be used in inference activities. What nationality is the narrator? What kind of person is Josepha? What in the text suggests this? The story could be compared with DeMauppasant's "The Gift of the Magi." The book is filled with wonderful metaphors to explore. Many topics lend themselves to discussion and writing--friendship, language barriers, and adjusting to new ways and places.
