Summary: |
In this charming book, Michael Foreman describes growing up in post-World War II England and preparing to be an artist. His text, watercolors, and illustrated memorabilia evoke innocence and pleasure in a world recovering from war. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The coming of age story provides an opportunity to do comparison/contrast discussion and writing. How has childhood changed? How was childhood different in England? Besson's October 45 offers another comparison with the end of World War II in France. Although the book focuses on a young boy, students might enjoy finding references to Mum and writing a character sketch of her. Used with Foreman's other books, War Boy and War Game, students would have a personalized view of World War II to correlate with significant historical events, perhaps with a timeline. Students interested in career in art could develop a list of the steps involved in Foreman's progress to use as a model.
