General Information:
Book Type(s):    short stories, memoirs/reminiscences

HSE Descriptor(s):

Summary:
The nine short stories in this collection all feature young people on the brink of adulthood. Although themes vary according to story, most are written as reminiscences. Since the author is Canadian, readers will learn about Canadian culture.

Teaching Ideas:
Characters are well drawn and may provoke interesting discussions. In addition, most stories lend themselves to other focuses: "Metaphor"--figurative language; "Lysandra"--revenge; "My MotherÂ…"--how children deal with loss, being different; "Mr. Manual"--reader response activities; "Waiting"-- siblings. Perhaps the most powerful story, "The Leaving," would be an effective DR-TA, after which learners may want to compare the story with modern times or reflect on the mother's decision making. ("The Pen Pal" and "My Cousin Clarette" are not as well suited for use in ABE classrooms.)

Teaching Strategies:
