Summary: |
This award-winning book uses firsthand accounts of experiences to offer a look at the role of young (some as young as 12) soldiers in the Civil War. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Reading Group members agreed that the writing is powerful and the children's voices are clear in this excellent book. Teachers might use Discussion Webs or Agree, Disagree, Why? as a vehicle to consider the broad issue of children going to war. Learners may want to collect the many interesting tidbits of information provided in the book (e.g., how and why clothing sizes came to be). Excerpts about food, clothing, or other issues could be added to other units. The photos are haunting; response activities will work well with them.
