Summary: |
This edited and illustrated book provides generous excerpts from Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. No textbook description of slavery could have even a tiny portion of the power of this chilling account. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Corretta Scott King's introduction draws parallels between Douglass's life and M.L. King, Jr.'s life; this would provide an interesting instructional focus. The author's introduction includes remarks about the historical context and the abridgement process. Both are excellent additions to the text. Teachers might want to use excerpts from later autobiographical works. The book (or excerpts) could be read aloud to students with response activities following. Learners might want to select and then perform passages in oral interpretation fashion. Douglass's journeys could be traced through map work. Students might keep journal entries about the development of Douglass's character.
