Summary: |
As a young girl living in France during the Nazi occupation, Helen can't understand why her best friend Lydia must wear a yellow star. The friends part when Lydia leaves a birthday party to warn her family that the Nazis are rounding up Jews. The friends never see each other again. |
Teaching Ideas: |
One Reading Group member thought the ending was too childish and minimized the seriousness of the Holocaust. The narrator's voice is powerful, however; students may want to consider how the story would be different if an adult--say Helen's mother or father--had told the story. Readers may be struck by the childlike innocence amidst all the brutality; discussion or response writing may ensue. |
