Summary:
In this unique book, noted nonfiction writer Russell Freedman offers a rare glimpse of what it meant to be a young newcomer to America in the early 1900s.

Teaching Ideas:
Here's another great book by Russell Freedman; it would be an excellent addition to a text set about immigration. Students may want to compare this turn-of-the-century immigration with present-day immigration in terms of laws, patterns, community services, attitudes, etc. Most cities have archival materials about this period; study of these would be a great class project. The book may also generate family history projects. The photos are interesting; students may wish to discuss or write about them.
