Summary:
Marianne heads west with 14 other children on an Orphan Train, certain that her mother will be waiting for her at one of the stops. No one shows interest in adopting Marianne until the train arrives at a place called Somewhere, where Marianne meets her new family and is finally ready to join them. Although historical fiction, the story is based on actual Orphan Trains that took children west from the 1850s to the 1920s.

Teaching Ideas:
This book is packed with emotion and so would be a good choice for response writing or discussion related to Marianne's feelings. Learners may wish to explore the social problem of orphans and the value of the "solution" of Orphan Trains. What makes a "home" and how one finds love and acceptance are other issues for writing or discussion. Teachers may want to locate the National Public Radio series on Orphan Trains to provide learners with additional information or perspectives. www.trains.com
