Summary: |
Hiroki Sugihara tells the true story of how his father, who was Japanese consul to Lithuania during World War II, issued visas to Jews to escape the Nazis without the approval of his government. The afterword supplements the story with the consequences of his actions. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Predictive and response strategies would work well. The story raises the discussion or writing topic of why some people take a stand during a crisis and others do not, as in the story of Oskar Schindler, which became a movie. The afterword mentions the Israeli honor, the "Righteous Among Nations," given to Sugihara. Sugihara's story could be compared with Raoul Wallenberg who performed a similar heroic feat for Hungarian Jews and who was also honored. The story has been dramatized and produced on Broadway. Students might enjoy comparing the two modes of storytelling to see which they prefer.
