Summary: |
This is the fictitious journal of a 13-year-old orphan stranded at Plimoth (sic) Plantation. Bowen constructed the 80-page journal from historical records and illustrated the words with marvelous woodcuts. The end pages too feature fascinating maps. Teachers may have to help students with some vocabulary or historical details. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This is an unusual book that could be used in creative ways. Of course it would logically fit into a unit on 17th-century U.S. history. It could be combined with a study of journals and diaries, with Roop's Diary of Columbus or Morpurgo's Wreck of the Zanzibar, for example. A teacher may want to look at superstitions of this community, combining it with Jenkins' Duck's Breath and Mouse Pie and asking students to record their own superstitions. Teachers may want to focus on medical practices, law enforcement, or other aspects of life that are described so naturally. Maybe teachers will want to look at communities with a sociological perspective and ask what is a society? The book makes compelling reading and will be appreciated by many.
