General Information:
Book Type(s):    nonfiction, true story, biography and autobiography

HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
Thirty African Americans tell their youthful experiences in the civil rights movement. The book includes a chronology, a who's who, a list of acronyms, and a bibliography.

Teaching Ideas:
The first person narratives are easily excerpted and are effective as read alouds by students or teachers. Students may want to keep response journals since the content is very emotional. The book could be paired with The Watsons Go to Birmingham (similar time frame) or Anthony Burns (Civil War). The who's who appendix provides follow-up biographical information that could lead to a discussion of how participation in the civil rights movement affected later lives.
