Summary: |
A series of poems--Shaker mottos--are accompanied by lovely paintings by Wendell Minor. The book begins with an historical note on the Shakers and ends with explanations of terms and concepts. It is a celebration of the lifestyle and contributions of this utopian community. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This simple text would be good to use for fluency with ESL students and low level readers, but the script-like print might cause difficulty. Teachers will want to use the introduction and end notes, perhaps to read aloud. This would be a great choice in text sets on religion or 19th-century U.S. history. Since there are Amish communities in Ohio, a comparison and contrast grid may be interesting. Since Shaker Heights was the location of a Shaker mill and community, a field trip to the Shaker Museum may be fun for those within the area. |
